Background of the Study
Hypertension is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions globally, with significant morbidity and mortality rates. In Nigeria, it is a major public health concern, with varying prevalence across regions. Kano State, located in the northern part of Nigeria, has seen a rising number of cases, primarily attributed to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, sedentary behavior, and limited access to proper healthcare services (Adamu et al., 2024). Nurses, as key health professionals in primary and secondary healthcare settings, play a critical role in educating patients about managing chronic diseases, including hypertension.
Nurse-led health education involves teaching patients about disease prevention, self-management strategies, and lifestyle modifications necessary to control chronic conditions like hypertension. Several studies have shown that such educational programs can be highly effective in improving patient knowledge, compliance with treatment regimens, and overall disease management (Ibrahim et al., 2023). In many cases, nurses are best positioned to provide continuous, personalized care and support to hypertensive patients, thereby influencing positive health outcomes (Oluwaseun et al., 2024).
In Kano State, where the burden of hypertension is significant and healthcare access is limited, nurse-led health education initiatives are crucial. These programs help to bridge gaps in patient knowledge, especially in rural areas where educational resources may be scarce. Previous studies have suggested that nurse-led interventions can empower patients, enhance their self-management abilities, and reduce the incidence of complications associated with poorly managed hypertension (Bello & Yusuf, 2024).
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led health education programs in managing hypertension in Kano State, evaluating improvements in patients' understanding of their condition and adherence to treatment regimens.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of effective treatments for hypertension, its management remains suboptimal in many parts of Nigeria, including Kano State. Factors contributing to poor management include low patient awareness, poor adherence to prescribed medications, and lifestyle factors that exacerbate the condition (Aliyu et al., 2023). Nurses, who often have direct contact with patients, are in a unique position to influence health behaviors and encourage adherence to hypertension management protocols.
However, despite the proven benefits of health education, there is limited research evaluating the specific impact of nurse-led educational interventions on hypertensive patients in Kano State. There is also a lack of structured programs within many healthcare settings, leaving gaps in patient education. The impact of these educational interventions on clinical outcomes such as blood pressure control and quality of life remains underexplored.
This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of nurse-led health education in improving hypertension management in Kano State, ultimately providing evidence to support the integration of such programs into routine healthcare practice.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led health education in improving hypertension knowledge among patients in Kano State.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led education on patients' adherence to hypertension treatment protocols.
3. To identify the challenges and opportunities for enhancing nurse-led health education programs in managing hypertension.
Research Questions
1. How effective is nurse-led health education in improving patients' knowledge of hypertension in Kano State?
2. What is the impact of nurse-led health education on patients' adherence to hypertension treatment regimens?
3. What challenges and opportunities exist in implementing nurse-led health education for hypertension management in Kano State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led health education significantly improves patients' knowledge of hypertension in Kano State.
2. Patients who participate in nurse-led health education programs demonstrate better adherence to hypertension management protocols.
3. The implementation of nurse-led health education programs leads to improved clinical outcomes in hypertensive patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will be conducted in selected healthcare facilities in Kano State, focusing on hypertensive patients and their experiences with nurse-led health education. Limitations include possible biases in self-reported adherence and knowledge, as well as challenges in recruiting a sufficiently diverse patient sample across urban and rural areas.
Definition of Terms
